Start With the Animals, Not the Fireworks
For a lot of couples, pets are family, and leaving them out of the day doesn’t feel right. But planning a pet friendly display means starting from the animal’s point of view rather than the show. Traditional fireworks affect animals for two reasons: noise and unpredictability. Most animals hear a far wider and sharper range of sound than we do, so sudden loud bangs can cause real fear and stress, even at a distance.
Animals most affected by traditional fireworks include:
- Dogs and cats, particularly those with existing noise sensitivities
- Horses and ponies, which can bolt or injure themselves when startled
- Cattle, sheep and other livestock on nearby farms

Your Options for a Pet Friendly Display
Where a display can go ahead, several approaches reduce the impact on animals. The right one depends on what’s in the surrounding area and whether your own pet will be on site.
Low Noise (Whisper) Outdoor Fireworks

We’ll always be straight with you here: low noise is not silent. For animals very close by, or particularly sensitive ones, indoor or daytime options are gentler still.
Indoor Cold Spark Effects
If your dog is staying at the venue, or you’d rather avoid outdoor noise entirely, indoor cold spark effects are a beautiful alternative. A cold spark system creates a fountain of bright sparks with minimal noise and no explosive content paired with low level fog — they are ideal for your first dance, cake cut or grand entrance. The effect is visually striking without the bangs that distress animals.
Many couples pair indoor effects with a low noise outdoor display later in the evening, once any pets on site have been settled somewhere quiet and away from the action.
Day Smoke Displays
A Day Smoke display uses coloured smoke during daylight rather than evening pyrotechnics. The visual impact is bold, the noise level minimal, and the timing slots neatly in after the ceremony or during the drinks reception.
